In the late 1940s, the northern end of what is now Silicon Valley was growing from farmland into subdivisions, public roads, and start-up businesses. Frank Hannig built his reputation there as a hardworking, honest attorney with a keen legal and business mind, serving the needs of a rapidly developing county.
Frank was corporate and personal attorney to some of the founders of today’s electronics industry — including Charles Litton, founder of Litton Industries — and his work brought him into contact with the founders of companies such as Hewlett-Packard and Ampex. Yet he remained dedicated to thorough service for all his clients, from real estate to business to estate planning, regardless of their station in life.
Respected by his peers, Frank served as President of the San Mateo County Bar Association, received the county’s Outstanding Citizen award, and was appointed Foreman of the Grand Jury by the judges of San Mateo County. His wife Theresa, a former schoolteacher, was well known in the legal community for introducing local students to the courts and judiciary.
In 1983, Ted Hannig joined his father in the practice of law. Father and son practiced together at Ropers Majeski, then a firm of over 175 attorneys, where Ted became one of its youngest senior partners. After opening the Silicon Valley office of respected real estate firm Miller, Starr & Regalia, Ted formed Hannig Law LLP on a simple premise: a local firm of experienced attorneys, bringing “big firm” experience to a more personal, client-oriented practice, could serve clients better.
The firm remains dedicated to complete client satisfaction through high-quality work and innovative solutions to complex transactional and litigation challenges. Perhaps its greatest honor: serving clients whose families have been with the Hannig family for over 50 years.

The Hannig Cup began in 2006, when Ted redirected his birthday gifts into a fundraising sailboat race at Sequoia Yacht Club — “The Give Something Back Race.” Participants later renamed the event in his honor. Since its founding, the Hannig Cup has distributed over $10 million to local charities, including a single client gift of over $800,000 to help fund a needed medical clinic. Ted also serves as Chair and President of the Sail It Forward Foundation, which has distributed over $15 million to charity.
